The Review (performance, 2012)

This work was part of a group exhibition titled Where Art We Going in which the artists had to concentrate on their relation and position within the artworld.

For this work I asked the curator of the exhibition to write a review about three of my previous works and then I intended to present his review as an artwork.

The performance started by me giving a short introduction to my previous works and afterwards I invited the curator of the exhibition to read the article he wrote about my works.

A review is meant to be a reflection on an artwork (within its original context) but more importantly, it is a reflection on (a much bigger frame) the artworld itself as a separate construction.

There is a shift of contexts and functions, since we usually discuss and look at a work of art, but now by placing a review in the context of the art gallery, the review itself is being looked at and discussed.

I wanted to present a review not only as a reflection on a work but as a reflection on the artworld itself, and what the curator did was that he put my concept into practice by writing a review not on my works but on my attitude, my request within the art context and the context of the exhibition.
